Venice, Italy - Day 2
We had a full day of adventures, traveling to these three islands. First stop was Murano and the glass factory.
I found this to be so fascinating. We lived in Dale Chihuly's backyard and I've never watched them actually make something. We found a beautiful keepsake for our memory wall at home.
Next stop was Turcello where we had lunch. Not much else to do there but was a great stop for eats, drinks, and gelato in the shade.
Last stop was Burano, famous for two things, lace and colored houses. This so reminded us of an area in Merida, Mexico that also has very colorful dwellings. We veered off the local path to get away from the crowds and found a great little shopping area. No one was there and we found some beautiful lace medallions. They will make a beautiful ornament on some bags.
On our way back to the boat, the local fire department was taking down a dead tree. It looked like they were training one of the firefighters. We watched for a bit and thought of Noah and Josh. Tree falling 101 - tie a rope to the tree!
We disembarked from the boat at Saint Marco's Square and walked back to our apartment, which took about 45 minutes. As you can see, there was a lot of people in the square. The picture on the left is the bell tower, originally built in the 9th Century. It is 323 feet high and is the tallest structure in Venice. It has been damaged, destroyed, and rebuilt several times.
The bridge on the lower right is the Bridge of Sighs. This is where the prisoners sentenced to life get one last chance to see the world on their way to prison. The story is, families will often wait in that canal to be seen by their loved ones. It is very sad when you think of it.
It was the end of the day and we were having dinner out, but it has a story… a long walk story! Keith really wanted Cacio e Pepe pasta for dinner. That's spaghetti with black pepper and pecorino romano cheese. He found a restaurant that was serving it, but it was a 30 minute walk, back towards the square. Remember, we had just walked 45+ minutes to get home and were both a bit tired. But off we went. About 10 minutes into our journey from our apartment, there was a sign at a popular local restauarant, serving Cacio that night. Nope, he wanted to go to this other restaurant so we trudged on. We finally found it… it was a take out. So we walked another 20 minutes back to the first place and had dinner. I had a glass of wine… it was a long day. 🥰
