Interesting things about life in Venice
When you live surrounded by water, life can be a bit tricky and challenging at times. Here are several things we found interesting as they have adapted to life on the water.
This long boat is our equivalent to the city bus called a Vaporetto. There are many of these and go from station (dock) to station transporting people all around the city.
This is a dirt remover. Where there is construction (and there was plenty), they dig up the dirt and cement, put it in large white bags, seen in the first picture. They are then lifted into the boat with a crane (seen in front of the driver in the back of the boat), It's then taken to a larger vessel that transports it to land.
This is a delivery boat and delivery man. Packages are picked up from a large vessel that transports them from the mainland to a loading dock in Venice. The smaller boat loads up based on geographical areas and offlloads to handtruck delivery men. They are seen all over town, dropping off and picking up. Even Amazon packages.
This is the local garbage collector. Once this is full, they take it to the canal and fill up the garbage barge, seen in the backgroung. Everything is separated at the home/business level into paper, plastics, glass, and garbage. It's very efficient.
We kept seeing these all over town and it finally dawned on me, it's a fire hydrant. Doesn't look anything we have at home.
This is a contractor, on his way to the job. He uses a dolly to carry his ladder, work tools, etc.
Delivery of grocery goods to the local grocery store.
If you guessed a toilet, you are right. You don't sit, you squat and they are very common in Asian countries, but they had a few in Italy too.
This is the local parking lot, for you boats. Many are just lined up the canels near your home, but some are in small neighborhood marinas, tied between the pilings.
This island is called Cimitero Island. It is the cemetary for anyone who passes away in Venice. There is no room inside the city, so everyone has a place on the island.
