Day 7-9 Santorini

Santorini is built on a caldera, which is a part of a volcano crater as you can see in this graphic. We headed to the south side where we found a small cove that was out of the wind and still had room for us.

There are very few sea level villages as everything is built on top of the island. In this picture you can see the steep cliffs inside the caldera. Consequently, there are very few anchorages, and they were open to the north winds.

We headed to the south end, out of the wind, and found an open bouy. We hooked up hoping we could stay. The bouy was owned by the restaurant owner where we had dinner that first night. He allowed us to stay on the bouy for the 3 nights for free… bonus!

This was a very small community right on the water front with several restaurants and a bus stop. This meant we didn't have to climb up any stairs or hills to get to the bus and we were all very grateful.

It had been a long day traveling and almost everyone jumped in to cool off and enjoy the water. So we didn't float too far away, we created a float line to hold on to.

Over the next two days, we all ventured into the hill top towns and had just an amazing time. The following pictures were taken by the group as they journeyed through Santarini and Oia. Santarini was in the center of the island and Oia (prounounced ee-ah) on the very north tip. We took buses and ubers to get around.

This turned out to be a great day and we were even able to have our laundry done while we were adventuring.

This is Red Beach, just around the corner from our moorage. But we had to climb up and over the point (to the right in the picture), and then back down. Wear good tennis shoes and you are golden and yes, we did. It was a great relaxing afternoon.
