Sibenik, Croatia
After leaving Trogir, we headed to Sibenik (Shib eh nik) for a two night, one day stay. On our way, we had an adventure we weren't expecting and don't want to repeat again.
I was driving and we came to a toll booth to get a ticket. As we approached the booth, there was a green arrow and I slowed down to stop and grab the ticket. As I did, neither Keith nor I saw the arm and thought there wasn't a toll. Sometimes there aren't tolls and you just go on through. So that we did, and SMACK - the arm hit the windshield and broke off, sirens went off, people came running, and I was shaken to the core. I pulled over in the mediun and Keith went back to talk with the attendants. The arm has a natural break away, so no harm, no foul (it appears others have done this before). They reset it, gave us our ticket and sent us on our way. It took many miles before my nerves could reset. At the next toll crossing, I was very careful and realized, the gates are smaller than they were in previous places and hard to see. So I didn't feel so bad… but someone kept making jokes about watching for the toll gates. He was lucky he didn't get smacked!
Gratefully, we arrived safely in Sibenik, frayed nerves and all. We didn't have any plans for the rest of the day, other than to do laundry. We had an AirBnB that made that possible, so we spent the afternoon resting and washing clothes. That evening, we went into town for a quick dinner and called it a day.
Sibenik was a town on a bay, but didn't have any beaches in town. The next morning, we chose to take a boat excursion out to see the St. Nicholas Fort and the beautiful bay.
This was an interesting stop light. The channel into the bay is an S shape and is narrow in places. When a large vessel comes through, the lights turn red to stop marine traffic until the vessel is through, then it turns green. This occured several times and it took me a bit to figure why all the boats were hanging out at the channel. Made perfect sense.
