Day 2 & 3 - Mykonos

Most of day two was spent motoring to Mykonos so day three was free for exploring. We started the day with a short ferry ride to Delos Island and toured the excavation of the Apollos and Artimas ruins. These ruins were discovered prior to 1873 and excavations have been on-going for 153 years. This was a very large recovery area with lots to see.

There were many lions in various stages of restoration. It was surprising how many didn't have any damage and were fully intact. In their day, the lions surrounded the palace for protection. It was said we were walking on the same paths the mythological gods walked on.

There were many mosiacs. This was the floor of the main gathering room in the palace. It takes years to uncover and restore these beautiful marble and granite masterpieces. Notice there's a very handsome man in this picture too.

This cistern was rebuilt, connecting many under ground wells. The top two pictures show how big the marble pieces are.

There is a small museum on site with many other items, including cooking items.

We just love to get off the beaten path and take the little streets and alleys, all about 10-15 feet wide, where not a single space goes to waste. Some of these cobblestone walkways are over 2000 years old. They have been well trod.

At the end of the day, Keith, Jill, and Craig went up to see the windmills. When these were in use, they had cloth sales on each rung to catch the wind. An amazing example of how they made things work 3000 years ago.
