BudaPest - part 2
Our disembarkation day gave us the whole morning to tour. We were staying at a hotel at the local airport for a flight the following morning. We couldn't check in until mid-afternoon, so we left our luggage at the boat and toured. Remember, the city of Buda was on one side of the river and City of Pest was on the other. We chose to explore Pest in the cool of the morning.
This is The Heros Square, a tribute to the founders of Hungary and a memorial to the country's historic figures.
‘Shoes on the Danube Bank’ is a memorial created in 2005 to honor the Jews who were massacred in Budapest during World War II. They were ordered to take off their shoes and were then killed at the edge of the water, where they fell in and floated away. The shoes were considered valuable because they could be sold to the militia. Such a sad event and a very moving memorial.
