Formula 1 - The Race

It was race day and everyone was excited. My favorite driver is Kimi Antonelli and I was rooting for him to win… again! But I realized it was unlikely. They had to replace the engine in his car and he ended up with a huge penalty, the back of the grid. A team is allowed to change a cars engine four times in a season, but after that, the driver is penalized and has to start the race at the back of the start grid. I had faith he could pull this out, he is just that good. By the start of the race, Kimi had moved up three positions to 19 as several other cars received penalties during the time trials. That's still way in the back.

Kimi was the only Italian driver, but he wasn't driving for the Italian team. It didn't matter, the fans were cheering for him just as much as they were for the Italian car drivers.

The race was finally on, but in the second lap, there was a spectacular crash and Charles Leclerc's Ferrari was knocked out of the race. His car was destroyed but thankfully, he was ok. It wasn't long before Kimi was in the middle of the pack, and near the end of the race, he was in the lead. It's the last lap and the fans went wild… he had defied all the odds and won the race. This was the first time an Italian driver won the F1 race in Italy since 1966.

We decided to forego all the celebration, knowing it was going to be a race to the train station. To get ahead of the crowds, we chose to head that way just before the race was over. Kimi was in the lead and we could hear the race announcers as we hustled out. We made it just in time and were the last ones in the que to make it onto the first train out. It was such a fun day and we were tired and headed home. On to the next adventure!
